How to find information on the internet.

As an example we can make a search for "apple pie recipes".

When we type in "apple pie" we trust the search engine to send us the information we want. But, sometimes we have to look at a lot of rubbish before we find what we are looking for.

This is how you can command a search engine to send you exactly what you are looking for.

To look for specific information we could search in the following three places:

1. The page URL (that’s the name of the web site) and looks something like this http://www.my-kitchen.co.uk/sauce.php

The search might look like this:

inurl:kitchen

2. Web sites can have thousands of pages and each one has a title so the second place to search could be in the page title which you can see at the top of the search information.

To find information in a title you search like this:

Intitle:recipes

3. The third place to search is in the text contained in the web page.

But, a page could have one hundred words or more than one thousand words on it, so to find a pages that has the words we are looking for we may write:

Intext:apple pie

Now, here is the trick.

We can save a lot of time by combining the searches to find a web site that is about "apple pie"

I might write into the search box:

intitle:sauce intext:apple pie

Spaces are important, notice the space between kitchen and intitle but no space between sauce and intext: or kitchen and intitle:

Most of the material in my-kitchen comes from the public domain.

The public domain is where books, films, paintings etc. go after the copyright has run out.

Anyone can use material from the public domain in any way they like. Basically public domain material is free to use by everyone.

However, be careful and always check that the material you want to use is defiantly in the public domain or you may end up being sued for using it.

More info on this to come…

I hope you enjoy your searching
